Life Begins At Forty!

Turning forty is a significant milestone, marking the onset of middle age when our bodies naturally start to undergo changes. Therefore, it’s crucial for everyone, regardless of gender, to prioritize their health from this age onward. It’s a time for both compensating for past health neglect and proactively combating the effects of aging. To ensure a healthier life beyond forty, it’s essential to adhere to the following guidelines, known as the “Five Avoidances and Four Do Nots.”

1. Stay Away from Raw and Cold Foods:

In our younger years, indulging in the occasional cold drink may not have seemed harmful. However, once we hit forty, it’s wise to ditch this habit altogether. While some may argue that Westerners consume ice water even in winter without issues, it’s crucial to recognize that their dietary habits and constitution differ from ours. For those over forty, avoiding raw and cold foods becomes vital for maintaining good health. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the importance of warmth for the stomach and kidneys. Cold foods can disrupt digestion and affect the body’s vital functions, particularly the spleen, stomach, and kidneys. To nourish these organs, opt for warm foods instead.

2. Cut Back on Excessive Sweetness:

Sugar plays a significant role in our diet as a carbohydrate and sweetener. However, excessive sugar intake, especially as we age and our digestive functions weaken, can lead to various health issues. Overconsumption of sugary foods can cause bloating, digestive discomfort, and interfere with nutrient absorption, potentially leading to chronic digestive problems and weakening of the body’s overall constitution.

3. Reduce Salt Intake:

Studies have shown that excessive salt consumption is linked to cardiovascular diseases. High salt intake can increase blood volume, putting extra strain on the heart and blood vessels, eventually leading to hypertension.

4. Be Mindful of Overheated Foods and Drinks:

Overheated foods and beverages are associated with an increased risk of digestive tract tumors, such as esophageal cancer. Hot foods can irritate the mucous membranes of the esophagus, potentially leading to tissue damage over time.

5. Practice Moderation in Eating:

Overeating can contribute to obesity, hypertension, and reduced oxygen supply to the brain. Eating in moderation and chewing food slowly can help alleviate the burden on the body’s digestive system.

In addition to these “avoidances,” there are four essential practices to remember:

1. Don’t Skip Milk:

Milk is a valuable source of calcium, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals essential for bone health and preventing conditions like osteoporosis.

2. Incorporate Eggs Into Your Diet:

Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein, vital for maintaining muscle mass and overall health. It’s advisable for middle-aged and elderly individuals to consume an egg daily.

3. Include Soybeans in Your Diet:

Soybeans are rich in protein and amino acids that promote cardiovascular health. Aim to include 150-200 grams of soy products in your daily diet.

4. Consume Fruits in Moderation:

While fruits are nutritious, excessive consumption can lead to a spike in sugar intake. Limit fruit consumption to 150-200 grams per day to maintain a balanced diet.

These simple yet practical guidelines can easily be incorporated into daily life. By making conscious choices and prioritizing our health, everyone over forty can take proactive steps towards a healthier and more fulfilling life!
