Detoxification is an essential aspect of health maintenance. We are flooded with detox options. Which is the best? How do we choose?
In today’s post, we will discuss the detoxification methods for various organs in our body based on TCM principles. As the Chinese saying goes, “Cleanliness and tidiness in the home is the foundation of household health”. If a home is cluttered with garbage and debris, it can lead to various problems. Likewise, if the body’s meridians are blocked and toxins accumulate, it can lead to health issues.
In a city, one of the most critical things to manage is traffic. Keeping traffic flowing smoothly is the fundamental expression of urban health, as we should with our bodies.
Kidneys
The kidneys make up one of the most crucial detoxification system in the body. Signs of toxic kidneys include: low energy, weakness, discomfort in the throat, hoarseness, declining memory, hair loss, loose teeth, bone overgrowth, and edema. The production and disappearance of menstruation are indications of the vitality of kidney function. Insufficient kidney function can lead to a decrease in menstrual blood. When the kidneys’ ability to excrete excess fluids decreases, the body may experience edema. Insufficient kidney detoxification can manifest in the jaw area. Reduced energy provided by the kidneys leads to fatigue, exhaustion, and weakness in the limbs.
The kidneys are an essential detoxification site. Uric acid in the body is mainly metabolized and excreted in the urine by the kidneys. Drinking plenty of water and urinating more frequently, especially in summer, helps maintain normal metabolism, which is a fundamental rule of health.
Liver
The liver in our body has detoxification functions. During the body’s metabolism process, the portal vein collects blood flowing from the abdominal cavity into the liver, where harmful substances and microbial antigens in the blood are detoxified and cleared. The liver is another main detoxification organ of the body. It protects the body from harm by rendering toxins less toxic or more soluble, which are then excreted from the body through bile or urine. However, if it is damaged, it cannot detoxify toxins. Toxins accumulate, eventually dissolving in the blood, affecting other organs. Our liver is like a large waste processor, working day and night to detoxify our bodies.
Intestinal Detox
It is often said that when the intestines are healthy, the person is healthy. How smooth the intestines process also represents the normal operation of the body’s metabolism. Waste metabolized by the intestines is excreted through feces. A healthy person should empty toxins and feces daily. If the intestines cannot be cleared in time, waste products will accumulate in the intestines, become dry, putrefy, and ferment, producing more than 120 kinds of toxins. These toxins are repeatedly absorbed by the large intestine, dissolved into the bloodstream, and transported to the whole body, forming turbid toxins. Turbid toxins in the blood reach the skin through capillaries, resulting in accelerated aging of the skin, dull complexion, wrinkles, and increased pigmentation.
Lungs
The lungs are one of the organs most prone to toxin accumulation. When we breathe, a large amount of air enters the lungs, carrying many harmful substances such as bacteria, viruses, and dust. Of course, the lungs can also expel metabolic waste gasses and other harmful invaders by exhaling. If toxins accumulate in the lungs, a person may often catch colds, coughs, or asthma, indicating sensitive trachea.
Skin
The skin is the body’s largest detoxification organ and an important detoxification organ. If toxins remain in the skin, it can cause spots, acne, eczema, or allergies. The sweat glands and sebaceous glands on the skin can excrete toxins through sweating and other means that are difficult for other organs to excrete.
Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system acts as the body’s toxin recycling station. Lymph fluid flowing throughout the body recycles toxins to lymph nodes, where toxins are filtered into the bloodstream and sent to the lungs, skin, liver, and kidneys for excretion. Patting and massage are beneficial for promoting lymphatic circulation and detoxification.
In summary, maintaining the health of various organs and systems in the body is essential for effective detoxification. Drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, getting regular exercise, maintaining emotional well-being, and ensuring adequate sleep are all crucial factors in supporting the body’s detoxification processes.
